Guy Stern als US Veteran beim Besuch in Deutschland.
76 Jahre nach 1945 reisen sechs U S-Veteranen nach Berlin und stellen fest, wie unterschiedlich der Krieg sie prägte.
„Von meiner Landung am 9. Juni 1944 am Normandie-Strand bis zum Kriegsende verhörte ich sicher mehr als tausend Wehrmachtsoldaten. Unsere normale Verhörtechnik, wir nannten sie buddy-buddy, ging ungefähr so: ‚Mensch,in deinem Soldbuch steht, du bist aus Düsseldorf. Ich ab euch oft auswärts in Hildesheim spielen sehen. Sympathische Mannschaft!‘ Und dann redeten wir über Fußball, ganz unbefangen, bis ich irgendwann fragte: ‚EuerStadion ist doch in der Nähe der Kugellagerfabrik, oder? …“

We had the pleasure of taking six WWII veterans back to Germany for a BattlefieldReturn program in July. With the global pandemic, this was the first international program for us in almost two years. For many of these gentlemen, this was their first opportunity to return to Germany since the end of the war, 76 years prior.
This program was extremely eventful and impactful for these men as we toured memorials, museums, concentration camps, met with government and military officials, etc. These gentlemen had never met each other, but by the end of the program, they were all best friends. They were able to get some much-needed closure from what they experienced 76 years ago.
